Thermal barrier coating in ceramics is becoming more common in many automotive applications. Mainly designed to decrease heat loss from the engine exhaust system elements, it is utilized in turbocharger casings, exhaust manifolds, exhaust headers, tailpipes, and downpipes. This method is also known as the “exhaust heat management”.

When utilized under-bonnet, such protective barriers have a positive effect of lessening the engine bay temperatures and reducing the intake temperature. These barriers have been applied to the inner lining of exhaust systems, and have only failed when the internal surface is not prepared properly before coating.
